How a Washable Coloring Blanket Works

A coloring blanket looks like a regular throw, except the design is printed as outlines that you color in yourself. Most models measure around 59 x 50 inches and come with a set of markers in the box.

The design is large, so it works well a little at a time rather than in one sitting. Because the blanket is wide, two or three people can work on it at the same time.

Patterns range from flowers and fruit to cats, food or retro game themes. Choosing the design is half the fun, so it is worth looking at the whole pattern before picking.

The key detail is the type of ink. Washable markers use water-based ink that, per the manufacturer, washes out in the machine, so you can start over. Always follow the care label on your blanket.

Permanent fabric markers do the reverse: they are meant for a design you want to keep, and they do not wash out. It helps to decide before you start which parts should be permanent.

A few practical tips help. Work on a table with the fabric pulled flat, and cap each marker as soon as you are done with it. A quick test on an edge shows how strong each color looks on the fabric.

Many adults treat it as a relaxing hobby, something to do with their hands while talking or listening to music. Once colored, it is still a cozy throw for the couch.
